Pompeii
A visit to this important place was a main reason we went to Naples. Being a mosaic artist, it seemed an important historical place that I should see in person. Many people recounted tales of how amazing it was to see the remains of a civilization that was buried in the tons of ash and debris from the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. A vast amount of material from Pompeii is exhibited at the Archeological Museum in Naples, but we didn’t have an extra day to visit that. But our full day visit to the site was plenty to take in!
It’s easy to take way too many photos in a place like this. I chose a selection to show the vastness of the site, and the various aspects of the city that were excavated and preserved. We didn’t see the entire site— that would take at least two days. This collection of photos roughly follows the path we took as we walked through that day in October. It was a good time to visit; there were plenty of people, but not nearly as many as I could imagine in the high season. Plus the temperature was just right. In the summer I bet it can get insufferably hot!
